20th Annual Wheelchair Foundation Golf Tournament

The 20th Annual Wheelchair Foundation Golf Tournament was recently held on the Lakeside course at Blackhawk Country Club and was another smashing success.

On a pleasant semi- sunny day, golfers enjoyed a full day of food, wine and fun. Starting with Bloody Mary’s, the golfers checked into this sold-out event.

Games, cigar bar and food were served on many holes by the Golf Angels. Long drive contests for men and women, beer pong, margaritas, and Fuddruckers hamburgers were a few of the annual favorites.

An oversold field of 148 golfers competed in the best ball event. There were many great scores with a net 51 being the winning score.

After golf, Raymond Vineyards and Castello di Amorosa poured their great wines and golfers enjoyed appetizers and a bagpiper playing while bidding on an array of great silent auction items.

Master of Ceremony and former tv sports announcer Mark Ibanez ran a live auction of expensive wine, tastings, sports memorabilia and golf trips at the formal dinner following golf.

3-time Hall-of-Famer “MJ” who was born with a walking disability also had his new book “Life of A Champion” available for sale.

Special thanks to all of the generous sponsors especially Bob Herzog of Farmers Insurance and Val Nunes of

Dreisbach Enterprises who are co-chairman of this great event.

David Behring President of the Wheelchair Foundation started by his father Ken 20 years ago said, “the real winners are the 1.2 million recipients who have received the gift of mobility all over the world and made my father’s dream become reality. We look forward to the 21st golf tournament in 2024.”

Burma 2

Recently, we enjoyed a great Burmese lunch at Burma 2 in Walnut Creek. We learned about this restaurant on the tv show “Check Please” and it peaked our interest.

The chef has over 20 years’ experience preparing dishes made fresh daily.  They are open daily for lunch and dinner and offer take-out and catering.  You may request light to spicy dishes and there is live music on Friday and Saturday nights.

Enjoy a Drakes Pilsner lager or one of their signature cocktails like the Burmese Python or a variety of wines while your food is being prepared.

We enjoyed their Coconut Chicken Palata and Chicken Lettuce Wraps for appetizers. For the entree we tried Sesame Beef and the traditional Tea Leaf Salad. Both were fantastic and full of bright flavors.

For dessert, our server recommended Shwe Gyi. It is a Burmese coconut crème cake with ice cream.

This is a “must do” foodie experience close to Danville in the wonderful city of Walnut Creek full of sensational shopping and a variety of dining establishments.

There was a morning session for wine lovers from 10:00 to 12.:30 and an afternoon session from 2:00 to 4:30

In addition to the sensational wine that has been produced for over 50 years, patrons enjoyed great food, photo booths and music on this sun splashed day.

This year the Release party featured 3 of America’s top pizza chefs. Chris Bianco, Ann Kim and Marc Vetri made a variety of their famous pizzas that brought smiles of joy while enjoying this great wine.

Hidden Gem: Santa Lucia Preserve Minutes From Famous Pebble Beach, California.

Recently, we had the pleasure to visit Santa Lucia Preserve near famous Pebble Beach, California. Our host was Riley Ramones who is the head pro at the Tom Fazio designed golf course.

This golf course is described on the web site as “a pastoral landscape ringed by mountains-a canvas unencumbered  by roads, homes, or distraction- and the result is one of the most serene and beautifully challenged 18 holes on the planet. Every tee is a postcard, every green a reward. Here bathed in the warm California sunshine is a private experience that lives up to its perennial top 100 ranking.” Memberships are available for both residents and non residents.

This private community sits on 20,000 acres 18,000 acres are protected in perpetuity by a conversation land trust. There are just 297 home sites. Besides golf,  Santa Lucia has a world class Equestrian Center, 3 dining venues, coffee house, lodging at the historic Hacienda, and a state of the art Sports Center. In addition, there is glamping and water sports at Moore’s lake, sporting courts and a swim center.  In addition to lots of fun in the sun, it is a great place for business meetings and weddings.

Our round of golf was very  special  having the entire golf course to ourselves and aided by our knowledgeable caddy and golf pro.

After golf, we enjoyed a great lunch enjoying sensational views of this special place.

We would highly recommend you make an appointment to tour this ‘slice’ of heaven. Having been to Augusta twice,  the drive into the  Santa Lucia Preserve rivals the ‘goose bumps’ you get when driving into Augusta on Magnolia Lane.

Cache Creek: Golf, Gambling, Food and Fun

Recently, we had the pleasure to go back to Cache Creek. 15 years ago we were at the Grand Opening of this first class golf course.  We have also been there a few other times.

From our home in Danville, it is an easy 1.5 ride to Brooks, Ca.

It offers a perfect getaway with golf, spa great hotel, gambling, food and world class entertainment. There are over 600 luxury rooms, 24 hour gaming, over 2000 slot machines, 150 game tables, 2 high stakes rooms, 28 table poker room, and state of the art live entertainment venue.

We checked into our neatly appointed view room and began with golf at the Yoche Dehe Golf Club. The name translates  to ‘home by the spring water’.  It is a Brad Bell design that stretches to 7300 yards with tees matched to every skill level. The green fees include range balls and new carts with GPS. The first tee is perched high above this pristine property and is a great way to start your round.

After golf, we enjoyed cocktails at the casino and dinner at Enso Sushi before going to see Smokey Robinson at their modern entertainment center with no bad seats and perfect acoustics.

William “Smokey” Robinson  was the frontman of the Motown  vocal group the Miracles. He was the chief songwriter and producer of the Miracles and well respected in the Music business.

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 1987 and awarded the  Library Of Congress Gershwin prize for his contributions to popular music.

In 2022 Smokey was inducted into the Black Music and entertainment Walk Of Fame.

We have seen him before and being originally from Detroit enjoyed all of his great music. His soothing voice is still amazing entertaining fans for over 50 years.

We plan to return soon to this 4 star Diamond Resort.

“Perfect Golf”

Appeared in Golf Magazine

By Mike L. Mc Colgan

Have you ever hit a 'perfect' shot every time in the round of golf? Sure there have been 59's scored in golf, but to be technically perfect in this game one would have to 'Ace' every hole and score 18. Obviously this is impossible even for Tiger Woods. However, in Special Olympics Golf there are no bad shots. Every shot is 'perfect' as these amazing athletes overcome many adversities and inspire many as you watch them play.

My son MJ is one of these athletes and has accomplished an amazing amateur record in Northern California and around the world. He has won 3 National Championships, 9 straight N. California State Championships, many Regional's and been inducted into 3 Hall Of Fame's. In 2004 he was inducted into the San Francisco Hall Of Fame and in 2006 he was inducted into the Michigan Hall Of Fame having been born there. In 2011 he will be inducted into the San Ramon Hall Of Fame for his accomplishments on and off the golf course. He has also participated in 3 Summer World Games Dublin, Ireland Shanghai, China and Athens, Greece.

Having just returned from the World Games in Greece and seeing these amazing athletes from 185 nations, it inspired me to write this article about this challenging game called golf. CEO Tim Shriver summarized the Summer Games in Greece by saying,

"“The great examples of these athletes in the Games go on and on, but one thing is clear: as our athletes continue to spread the spirit of unity beyond the borders of Greece, we have an opportunity to join them. We can play unified with them, and we can live unified thanks to them.”

Golf is a difficult game. Pittsburgh Steeler and Hall Of Famer Lynn Swann has said, "I come off the golf course and I am always down. So I go home, take a shower, I put on my 4 Super Bowl Rings and say, "I am an athlete."

After being involved with Special Olympics Golf for many years, I am never down in golf. As long as the shot is in play, it is 'perfect'. Elizabeth Kubler Ross became famous for writing about the 7 stages of grief. These stages can also be applied to golf.

· Shock stage: Initial paralysis at hearing the bad news.-Hitting a Bad Golf shot

· Denial stage: Trying to avoid the inevitable.-Denying that one could hit a bad golf shot

· Anger stage: Frustrated outpouring of bottled-up emotion.-Swearing, throwing a club-getting upset

· Bargaining stage: Seeking in vain for a way out.- God-Get me out of the bunker and I will never be angry again

· Depression stage: Final realization of the inevitable.-Realizing that I will not be a scratch golfer

· Testing stage: Seeking realistic solutions.-Taking lessons to improve my golf game

· Acceptance stage: Finally finding the way forward.-Realizing that I will never break 70, 80, 90 or 100 and enjoying the game, the people the surroundings and making a few great shots or putts--

From changing times.com,

Getting stuck

A common problem with the above cycle is that people get stuck in one phase. Thus a person may become stuck in denial, never moving on from the position of not accepting the inevitable future. When it happens, they still keep on denying it, such as the person who has lost their job still going into the city only to sit on a park bench all day.

Getting stuck in denial is common in 'cool' cultures (such as in Britain, particularly Southern England) where expressing anger is not acceptable. The person may feel that anger, but may then repress it, bottling it up inside.

Likewise, a person may be stuck in permanent anger (which is itself a form of flight from reality) or repeated bargaining. It is more difficult to get stuck in active states than in passivity, and getting stuck in depression is perhaps a more common ailment.

Going in cycles

Another trap is that when a person moves on to the next phase, they have not completed an earlier phase and so move backwards in cyclic loops that repeat previous emotion and actions. Thus, for example, a person that finds bargaining not to be working, may go back into anger or denial.

Cycling is itself a form of avoidance of the inevitable, and going backwards in time may seem to be a way of extending the time before the perceived bad thing happens

Special Olympics Golf has taught me that there are no bad shots and to accept each shot as being 'Perfect'. Understanding this concept, will make the game more enjoyable for golfers at all skill levels.

Accept your skill level and realize that if you shoot your handicap that you will be doing very well. Studies have proved that if your handicap is legitimate that you will only shoot below it 25% of the time. Finally, learn and accept that there are no bad shots in this game, every shot is 'Perfect'.

Eataly: Silicon Valley “Must Do”

Recently, we had the pleasure of going to Eataly located at Valley Fair Mall in Silicon Valley. It is an easy drive not far from our home in Danville. This location opened in June of 2022.

This is a “foodie paradise” with 3 floors of Italian foods, 5 restaurants and a wine floor that will satisfy any palate.

The Eataly format resembles a foodie-fantasy of an Italian village, complete with restaurants, cafés, and market stalls. Give yourself a couple of hours to explore this special Italian food experience.

We especially enjoyed the cannelloni and took some home with us along with fresh pizzas, cheeses, cannoli’s, ravioli’s and a bottle of Blood Orange Mimosa.

We had lunch at La Pizza and La Pasta enjoying raviolis and great drinks. I enjoyed the Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA and an Aperol Spritz made with Aperol, Prosecco, Soda Water and Orange.

The most unique part of the lunch was the dessert. I ordered the

cannoli‘s which were presented on a platter-make it yourself style. A tube of cream and all the toppings came out on a board. (See picture below) Needless to say it was a very fun dessert experience as we filled our shells with cream and topped it with pistachios, chocolate chips and nuts

Eataly is the creation of Oscar Ferranetti. In just six years, this son of a Piedmont pasta maker has built an epicurean empire. From its base in Turin, Eataly has expanded across Italy to New York and Tokyo, with 20 locations opened and 17 more on the drawing board.

Eataly is open 7 days a week and a ‘must do’ to add to your bucket list. We look forward to returning soon.

LIFE IS A CABERNET: SILVER OAK'S 2018 RELEASE PARTY

Recently, we had the pleasure of attending the 2018 Silver Oak Release Party at their location in Napa.

Besides the release of the 2018 Silver Oak, patrons enjoyed live music, fantastic food from 2 famous pitmasters, Truth Barbeque and Trudy’s, picture booths and much more.  To better manage this popular event, there was a morning session from 10 to 12:30 and a afternoon session from 1 to 3:30

The release day featured the 2018 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Ruby in color the wine has notes of strawberry, carnation, black pepper and vanilla with a blackberry finish and a cherry return. We enjoyed several tastes of this lovely wine.

The Silver Oak elegant Cabernet has been satisfying wine enthusiasts for over 50 years, founded by Ray Duncan and Justin Meyers in 1972. We had the pleasure to meet David Duncan, Rays son, who is the current proprietor/chairman of Silver Oak. He encouraged us to visit Silver Oak's new winery located in Alexander Valley. We plan to do that soon,

Pebble Beach 2023

For many years we have been celebrating 2 special days at the iconic Spanish Bay Inn during the ATT golf tournament.  We celebrate our Hall-of-Famer son, MJ’s Birthday, who was born on the Super Bowl, and our wedding anniversary.

We love everything about Spanish Bay. Roy’s Restaurant, superior service and the Bagpiper playing on the ocean at sunset is an experience that is a ‘must do’ and never gets old.

The smell of the wood burning fireplaces and sight of the ocean vista’s when you check into the iconic Inn is a remedy to immediately ‘soothe’ anyone’s soul.

This year was extra special as we were introducing MJ’s autobiography ‘Life Of A Champion’.

The book is a chronicle of many great experiences.  48 Gold Medals, multiple State and National Championships, playing golf all over the world, meeting many famous people, and being inducted into 3 Hall of Fames for his ‘many‘ accomplishments on and off the golf course has resulted in a full rich life. In this book, MJ has shared these wonderful memories.

His book is in great demand by many families and friends. Autographed copies will only be available from MJ and in the Blackhawk Country Club Pro shop. As parents, we are extremely proud of our ‘Hall-of-Famer’ son.

Congratulations MJ. You have ‘inspired greatness’ to many all over the world.

Since you retired from golf, we are impressed with your new chapter of life helping to make the world a better place with your involvement with the Danville Rotary, Wheelchair Foundation and your successful annual MJ Gift Of Life Red Cross Blood Drive held at Blackhawk CC. We are also looking forward to your new venture with Pride Mobility.

To request an autographed copy of

“Life Of A Champion”, send an email to lmccol3525@aol.com.
