"It Is a Beautiful Day At Pinehurst"--For Publication
By Mike L. Mc Colgan
When you call famous Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina, a warm southern accent kindly greets you with, "it is a beautiful day at Pinehurst, how can I help you?" Recently my wife, son MJ(three time National Special Olympics Golf Champion) and I had the opportunity to visit and play golf at this special golf mecca known as the St. Andrews of the United States.
In 1895 Boston philanthropist James Walker Tufts purchased 5800 acres for $1.00 dollar per acre. In 1900 Tufts hired Scottsman Donald J. Ross to head golf operations at Pinehurst. Ross remained with Pinehurst until his death in 1948. He designed more than 400 golf courses and lived on his favorite Pinehurst Number 2 which was his first golf course design. Pinehurst Number 2 has hosted Ryder Cup Matches, The PGA, Tour Championships, and US Opens. Payne Stewart made the famous 15 foot putt on number 18 to win the US Open in 1999. It also was the venue for the 2005 US Open and 2008 US Amateur. In 2014 it will be the host of the US Men's' and Women's' Open. This will be the first time the these Opens will be held back to back.
Just as Tufts envisioned 100 years ago, we found this special place to be a slice of golf heaven and peaceful retreat from our busy world. They have 8 courses that you can play, an award winning spa, tennis facility, dining, shopping and more. We found a great Greek restaurent called Theos in the downtown area that was so good we went there twice.
We especially liked rocking away on the mammoth porch outside of the Ryder Cup Lounge of this stately and charming hotel. The hotel has 400 nicely appointed rooms with flat screen tvs and feather beds to insure a deep sleep as you prepare to play the beautiful and challenging golf courses. They also have some great caddy's who can tell you many interesting story's as you play the golf courses. The caddy's cost $50.00 plus tip and are well worth the expense especially on Pinehurst 2 with their challenging crown greens. Pinehurst Number has 5 sets of tees to accomodate every skill level that range from 7335 yards for the pros and 5045 for the women. Our caddy also told us that when North Carolina native Michael Jordan(MJ) plays he wagers one dollar per yard meaning that if he lost every hole on the US Open tees he would loose $7335.00.
This is definitely a place that every golfer should visit as every day is a "Beautiful Day At Pinehurst." For more information go to Click here: North Carolina Golf Resorts | Pinehurst | Luxury Golf & Spa Resorts
